The Many Faces of Carl
Carl is a fan and attendee of Comic Conventions.  Beginning with the Eugene Comic Con (EUCON) 2015 as a lark he commissioned a few caricatures of himself.  The results pleased and intrigued him.  This developed into a hobby and is a way to help support the comic arts.  The original works and the modified versions are submitted here for your enjoyment

Most of these are commissioned pieces of "fan" art, however unsolicited submissions are also welcome. Do you have the moxie to put your work next to these guys?  Then send them to me at this address:  barkingcrayon@gmail.com.

A tip of the hat to those artists willing to play along.

Note to Artists:  if you would like me to link to a different page or I failed to credit you correctly please let me know.  Different/another version of your Carl is always welcome.

Eugene Comic Con,  Eugene, OR  2015

Picture
From Eucon 2015. A very fun, whimsical version of Carl done by Alexandria Lomuntad. Nicely done.
Picture
I added color and a bit of shading.

Picture
This is a Christmas present from my daughter featuring some of the characters from my comics. I really nice job. Not sure which I like best.
Picture
Since this is Carl's site I singled him out for attention. I just gave him his traditional colors.

Picture
Shawn Cruz at Eucon 2015. He had a great take on Carl. To me it looks like Carl letting his hair down after work or post-mission.
Picture
I added color and a border. This might make a good T-shirt and/or button.

Picture
From Eucon 2015, a commission done by Rick Marcks. A nice job and really captured the James Bond quality in Carl. Site: http://sketchmarcks.daportfolio.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/RickMarcks/photos_stream
Picture
I punched up the colors a bit and added a border. Carl looks like he is about to play some hardball.

Picture
Eucon 2015: Ariel Statchwick. A simple, cute version of Carl.
Picture
I added color and a bit of shading.

Picture
Dani Saiz did a simple, serious Carl. He might be vexed here.
Picture
Just colored and shaded.

Picture
Jack Stepp drew this Mob Boss version of Carl at the 2015 Eugene Comic Con. A great job with a short story: Jack was commissioned to draw Carl towards the end of the show and paid in advance. We had to leave without receiving the drawing. Just one of those things. Well, sketchy webmaster that I am I did not notice that Jack tried to contact me through this site. 7 months went by before I noticed. I finally replied and he still had the drawing and emailed me a copy. Brilliant! Thanks Jack, great job. I'm posting it pretty much as you drew it.

Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, Or  2016

Picture
2016 Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, OR: This is not really Carl but I imagine him to be a foe. You would think that I saw this and decided Kai Martin would do a good job on Carl, but in fact the opposite happened. He drew Carl and when I returned to pick up the drawing we perused his portfolio and found this. Nice. So this is technically not Carl however I am proclaiming him to be a porcine villain on the wrong side of a fight. You mess with the boar and you get the tusks. Update: Kai says this is piece from Lord of the Flies.
Picture
colored version

Picture
2016 Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, OR: A pencil sketch card of Carl done in Power Puff Girls' style by Ethen Beavers. Very different than my style.
Picture
I inked it and colored in bold style. Zowie, Carl stepped through the looking glass here.

Picture
2016 Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, OR: First off, a doff of the hat to Matt Hebb for the crazy big pistol. Carl seems to be saying, "Really? Go ahead and try."
Picture
Matt did this in pen with a light wash and a splash of red. I colored it following his shading as best I could. It really turned out well.

Picture
I met Rick Marcks again at 2016 Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, OR, and he did not mind having a 2nd go at Carl. I liked the 1st one and I think I like this one better. I just removed a smudge or two and tweaked the colors, otherwise this is just as Rick drew it. Terrific job. It looks like Carl really means business.

Picture
2016 Wizard World Comic Con, Portland, OR: A great, crusty, detailed interpretation of Carl by fine artist: Kai Martin. Totally not my style which makes these drawings so much fun for me.
Picture
I added color and shading. What I got is an awkward looking pig who looks stunned.
Picture

Picture
2016: A birthday gift from my daughter. She rendered Carl in barbarian style battling on of my other characters, Ed the Cat.

Picture

Emerald City Comic Con,  seattle, Wa  2016

Picture
A nice "Fast and Good" sketch by Milton Cadogan. Carl looks quite formidable. Bacon? I think not.
Picture
This is my first crack at coloring Milton's sketch. I plan on doing another after I get the rest of the ECCC caricatures posted.

Picture
Lukas Ketner drew this nice caricature of Carl. Here he is engaged in one of the least appreciated skills in spycraft. A nice job and a departure from the glamour and glory shots.
Picture
I just colored it simply. I like this a lot so I probably won't mess with it again.

Picture
Dan Schkade did a great job producing a menacing Carl. Fortunately most folks never see this side of him.
Picture
Dan's rendering really did not need a thing added but I did it anyway. It looks like Carl might be doing a bit of wet work here.

Picture
Sam Logan did this nice rendering of Carl. In true spy fashion, he has a drink in one hand and a pistol in the other. Nice work here.
Picture
It was fine as is but I added color here. There seemed to be a ta-da quality to this drawing so I put him in a spotlight.

Picture
Daniel DePaolo did this crafty looking version of Carl. I bought one of his books at Wizard World Con in Portland then ran into him at ECCC. Really nice job here. No coloring needed but I did it anyway.
Picture
Dan has a style that urges you to color it. So I did. I will Likely color it differently later. For now, I just want it posted.

Picture
Tait Howard had a totally different take on Carl. To my mind this is the neon beer sign version of Carl.
Picture
He looks a bit more interesting on a black background.
Picture
Well I just made him with normal lines and color. I like him best this way. To me he looks like a Bob's Burger version of Carl.

Picture
Jerry "Jerantino" Minor drew Carl in a "are you serious" pose. Nice job. Nice metallic look on the .45 auto. I just cleaned it up a little otherwise it is just as he drew and colored it. BTW he had some great work at great prices at his booth at ECCC.
Picture
Dane Ault with Monkey Minion Press drew this Carl on a 2.5in x 3.75in sketch card.

Picture
Patric Reynolds of Murdering Ink fame drew this version of Carl. His art is very different from mine. He has a scratchy, stark style that really lends itself to black and white. I am now a big fan. I was so pleased I had him draw Hellboy and incorporate Carl's logo. Great jobs both. 2 things that struck me besides his amazing talent. First is the scale he draws in. These are sketch cards about 2.5 x 3.75 inches. Most things posted in this Carl gallery are 6 x 6 or larger. Amazing. Second, is his normalcy. When I first saw his work he was not at his booth. He was on one of the many panels at ECCC. I was intrigued enough to return later. He was not the tatted, circus freak I expected but rather a regular guy with a good sense of humor occupying a booth next to action hero/author/artist Landry Q. Walker. A great artist and nice guy with reasonable prices. Click the art and visit his site.

Picture
Kel McDonald drew this version of Carl. It looks like he just got away with something.
Picture
I just added a bit of color. Not sure I like this job but will have to do for now.

Picture
Leann Moffitt did this cute little Carl. The pencil sketches are from the back of her piece. Nice job here. She has a clean, simple style similar to my own.
Picture
Basically I just colored him in. He looks pretty good. In fact he looks a bit professorial to me.

Picture
This drawing by Kevin Hanna has a woodcut feel to me - very different from my style.
Picture
As if we needed more proof that every artist sees Carl a little differently... Jonathan Lamantia looks like he snuggled a teddy bear style Carl with a skull. Very unique.

Picture
Jeff Martin did this thuggish version of Carl. This is a Carl I would not want to mess with. Nice job here.
Picture

Picture
Corinne Roberts drew this great little Carl striking a pose as a secret agent / model.
Picture
This Carl was very fun and easy to color.

Picture
Derek Fridolfs did a clean, simple Carl sporting a very satisfied look. He likely just plugged a villain or several.
Picture
a simple, clean coloring.

Picture
Conner Fawcett saw Carl in this fun, goofy way. Very nice.
Picture

Picture
Russel Roehling did a super aggressive Carl diving into action.
Picture

Picture
Carl looks like he is pondering the quality of his martini in Jim Terry's rendering. Carl in a tux - nice touch that.
Picture
To me, this Carl has a very Bond/Goldfinger feel. Nice.

Picture
Adam Withers drew a crafty looking Carl. It looks like he is sneaking up on a bad guy. Nice job here. I would hate to be the one Carl is about to surprise.
Picture

Picture
Nero O'Reilly drew a Carl in the heat of battle.
Picture
Another battle scarred Carl this one by Iris Jay.

Picture
Diana Harlan Stein saw Carl as a spacewalker complete with custom suit. Very nice.
Picture
Diana Harlan Stein also pictured Carl running from an explosion.

Cherry city comic con,  Salem, OR  2016

Picture
Jack Stepp makes a second showing in the Carlucopia Gallery with this bold addition. A very nice Bondesque Carl. Jack's weapon game is strong. This is just as he drew it with the small addition of the red frame.

Picture
A gal from Battle Ready Artists drew this crafty looking Carl.
Picture
I just colored it and placed him in position.

Picture
Colin Lawler enters the Carlucopia Gallery with this unique take on Carl. A nice rendering of him looking unimpressed.
Picture
Just added color. Turned out nicely.

Picture
Clayton Hollifield imagined a Yoda/Bat/Nosferatu kinda pig with a nifty lapel pin.
Picture
So I colored it. And it turned our looking like an awkward photo ID.

Picture
Neil Jorge.

Picture
The incomparable Rick Marcks makes a record-setting 3rd appearance in the gallery with this bold Carl. He is probably tired of seeing me at Comicons by now but he does such a great job that I can't help asking him to take yet another stab. He has a very solid gun and drapery game which are ideal for comics. I hope he can get Carl a bit part in the movies when he is working for Marvel.
Picture
Once again Rick did all the heavy lifting as far as the coloring and shading go. I just tweaked the contrast and added a frame. I really like it.

Picture
Picture
Big Dave drew Carl as Sammuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction. Possibly undercover. Nice job here.
Picture
I just colored some of it.

Rose City Comic Con  2016

Picture

Picture
This is Carl a la Amanda Zito. She has a style that looks like a woodblock print. Nice job here and very different from my version. Nice job.
Picture
It was just fine in B&W but I liked it enough to slap some color on it. Looks pretty good.

Picture
Brennan Wagner did a great job capturing a suave Carl here. It has a 1950's magazine cartoon feel. I can picture this on a cocktail napkin for some reason. (Note: I cannot find a good link to Brennan Wagner)
Picture
I added a frame and toning. Frankly I think I like the original better.

Picture
Tara Avery had a very Bondesque vision of Carl.
Picture
I added a frame and some color. Not too bad.

Picture
My half-daughter was trying to think of something to draw in and idle moment at the Con. Naturally I suggested Carl. This is her rendering. She drew him on a ledge because: "that's just how I pictured him." ... Okay then.
Picture
I inked her sketch and added the caption. Turned out pretty well. FYI: so far she is the only guest artist on Barking Crayon.

Picture
Ed Siomacco would not accept payment for this fine, little drawing of Carl. So I bought something at his booth.
Picture
Ed's drawing in colorful glory.

Picture
Neil Devlin saw Carl as a harpoonist, an angry harpoonist.
Picture

Picture
Cassie Anderson drew a smart looking pig here.
Picture
Color added.

Picture
The Amazing Rick Marcks drew a grim Carl racing away on a Vespa. Nice. That is so like Carl.
Picture
I tweaked things a bit here and gave it a frame. A pig of action this.

Picture
Leann Moffitt makes her 2nd appearance here. Another nice job.
Picture
And with some color.

Eugene Comic Con 2016

Picture
Picture
Jack Stepp's third rendering of Carl - and this time a full frontal. Jack is one of those guys who is quick, clean and thorough. His "sketches" are basically finished works. Carl means business here.
Picture
All I did was tweak the colors a bit and add a black background. It looks great. This is a pig I would not want to mess with.

Picture
A sketch done at Eucon 2016 at the Copic Marker booth. I usually sketch in pencil then pen then color on the computer so this a bit out of my comfort zone.
Picture
Another sketch done at the Copic booth. The Copic boys really did a nice job here. There were bunches of markers available to try out and plenty of paper. Sweet.

Picture
This was drawn by "Poke Sam." Not sure if this is a real name or a pseudonym.
Picture
For some reason I pictured Carl pinned down in an alley.

Picture
I asked Rick Marcks to draw Carl as if he was selling cigars or something old school. This is the result. Nice job.
Picture

Wizard World Comic con 2017.   Portland, Or

Picture
Picture
Sudi Rouhi saw Carl this way. I endeavor to commission folks with different styles. Mission accomplished here. This Carl looks like a cross between a pig and a sugar glider. I really like it since I would never have seen Carl this way.
Picture
Ok, so I inked it and had him stand up a little straighter.

Picture
Colin Lawler has a second go at Carl. This version has him looking grim and dangerous. Somebody just did something to upset him and now a response was demanded.
Picture
So I inked and colored it and this is the result. Nice.

Picture
Simon Fraser the well traveled Scots comic artist drew this polished likeness of a bold, dangerous Carl. A really nice job here.
Picture
I turned it into a simple mock comic book cover.

Emerald City Comicon 2017

Picture

Picture
Jay Fosgitt drew the "before" picture of Carl. He is a bit out of shape here since he was between missions. Shortly after the new year he dropped the weight and feels like a new pig.
Picture
With color. I fun little Carl here.

Picture
K. Lynn Smith of Plume Comic fame debuts in the Carlucopia with a nice rendering of an exasperated Carl. He looks like he is being forced to deal harshly with a nagging adversary.
Picture
Adding a bit of color.
Picture
And finally ruining her drawing by turning it all cartoony. Carl looks like he is mad at me for putting him in a comic setting.

Picture
Pablo Leon drew Carl evading villains on the slope. This has a very 1950's feel to me. A unique take a stylish job.
Picture
I just colored and angled the trees to steepen the slope. This might make a good Christmas card.

Picture
Kelly Williams drew a tired, teching Carl lost in his phone. A problem all too familiar to us all.
Picture
Colored and framed.

Picture
Ed Siomacco of SpaceCat fame gives Carl as second go and ups the ante with a sporty SUV. No doubt Carl is leaving overturned cars and/or an exploding building in his wake.
Picture
Color added.

Picture
Stephanie Mided saw Carl as a bit of a boozer. Perhaps the stress of being the most interesting pig in the world is getting to him.
Picture
Cropped and colored to my liking.

Picture
Caitlin Ono drew a very refined Carl. To me this looks like a drawing that would accompany a profile piece done in a magazine from the mid 1900's. Staged and dapper, maybe he is posing for a class photo.
Picture
And with a bit of color. Hmm, I might like this better in black and white.

Picture
Corrine Roberts makes a bold, second appearance with a grim Carl. Gone is the jaunty porcine of her first rendering. This Carl means business. Nice work.
Picture
She did a thorough job. I just punched up the color a bit and framed it.

Picture
Lukas Ketner makes a strong second showing with a crafty, clandestine Carl stealing nutritional secrets. Nice job here.
Picture
Just a dash of color added here.

Picture
Dan Schlade makes a second appearance in the Carlucopia with a StarLord-esque version of Carl.

Picture
Sean Dillion saw Carl as a pig of bold action. Carl is leaping into the fray! Really nice job here.
Picture
I tried to give Sean's drawing some bold color. This is OK but I might give it another go.

Picture
Clay McCormack drew Carl in a surly mood with a hybrid AR-15/Barrett combat rifle. Nice job.
Picture
B & W
Picture
And with a bit of smoke and color.
