A few notions about Carl's "Fan" Art...
Strictly speaking, this is not really fan art since most of the work is commissioned but it is an easy shorthand description. That said, some of it was not commissioned and many of the artists enjoy drawing him.
The reason for this gallery is manifold. First and foremost is that I enjoy it. The compilation of this gallery has been a delightful adjunct to my artful life. What began as a lark has become a great way to meet artists and motivate me to improve and just move forward. Oddly I am not much of a fan of comic books but love the comic artwork. So this commission is my way to support their work.
This gallery is a convenient way for me to share work and promote those who contributed. I can link to their sites and galleries. I can show the artists how I colored or modified their version of Carl which often include my comments or insights.
I select the artists on the following criteria: 1) I like their work. 2.) Do they accept commissions? 3.) Can I afford them? 4.) Is their work different from my own? 5.) Have I run out of money by the time I reach their table? Frankly there are so many talented people with great concepts I regret that I cannot get them all to put their spin on Carl.
I am constantly surprised how accommodating folks are with this goofy assignment and only a few times have I been rejected or disappointed. I suspect they get tired of drawing the latest super hero or villain. In fact, most artist are quite intrigued by the challenge especially since I give them a character sheet and short personality description. They are off to the races.
BTW: If you would like to fashion your own version of Carl, you can send me an email or a link. Carl will appreciate it and post it in the gallery.
